The most important warning sign: rattling at cold start
Typical is a metallic rattling or clattering in the first seconds after a cold start that quietens or disappears after a short time. The reason: at start-up the hydraulic chain tensioner does not yet have full oil pressure — a stretched chain then audibly slaps against guide rails and housing.
If the rattle remains audible with the engine warm, at idle, or under load, the stretch is usually already advanced. At the latest then, the chain drive should be professionally inspected.
Error memory: camshaft–crankshaft correlation
A stretched chain shifts the position of the camshafts relative to the crankshaft. The engine ECU detects this deviation via the shaft sensors and logs correlation faults — depending on manufacturer, e.g. codes in the P0016–P0019 range. Sporadic check-engine-light activity, rough idle, worse starting behaviour, and loss of power can also point to shifted valve timing.
Reading the error memory is therefore part of the initial diagnosis. In the workshop, the actual stretch can be assessed via a valve-timing check or — depending on the engine — via camshaft-adjustment readings.
Causes: oil, intervals, and design
The chain does not lengthen by stretching but through wear in the joints of the chain links. This is promoted by old or incorrect oils, overrun service intervals, frequent short-trip driving, and fuel dilution of the oil. Worn chain tensioners and guide rails also contribute to the problem.
Some engine families are more susceptible by design than others — documented examples are the BMW N47 (chain at the transmission side, labour-intensive replacement), the Mercedes OM651, and early VW Group TSI engines. Details on the individual engine families can be found on our engine pages.
Keep driving, replace the chain, or replacement engine?
With clearly audible chain rattle you should not keep driving for long: if the chain skips, valves hit pistons on most modern engines — the damage is then catastrophic. Replacing chain, tensioner, and guide rails in time is far cheaper than the consequences of a chain failure.
