Worn clutch: the classic signs
The clearest symptom is the slipping clutch: engine revs rise under acceleration — especially in high gears or uphill — without the vehicle pulling accordingly. A burnt smell often accompanies it.
Further signs: a noticeably changed bite point (very high or low), stiff or incomplete disengagement (gears engage poorly with the engine running, crunching when shifting), and shuddering when pulling away. Launch judder can come from the clutch, but also from engine mounts or — frequently — from the DMF.
Faulty dual-mass flywheel: how it shows
The DMF decouples the engine's torsional vibrations from the gearbox. Typical wear signs are metallic rattling or clattering at idle (often disappearing when the clutch is pressed), rattling when switching the engine off or starting it, vibrations and droning at low revs, and knocking on load changes.
Diesel and turbocharged engines with high torque stress the DMF particularly — lugging at low revs and frequent launches with a slipping clutch accelerate wear further. In the workshop, the DMF can be assessed with the gearbox removed via rotational free play and rock (tilt) play.
Clutch or DMF — the distinction
As a rule of thumb: slipping and disengagement problems point to the clutch; noises and vibrations at idle and at start/shutdown point to the DMF. If an idle rattle changes clearly when the clutch is pressed, that suggests DMF or release bearing rather than the gearbox.
A definitive distinction is only possible at disassembly. Because the labour — removing the gearbox — is identical in both cases, both are usually replaced together when wear is evident: clutch kit plus DMF. That way the high labour share is incurred only once.
Keep driving or act?
A slipping clutch wears quickly from that point and can also damage the flywheel through overheating. A badly worn DMF can in the extreme case break up mechanically and cause consequential damage to the starter, bellhousing, or crankshaft — both should be remedied promptly.
