DPF blocked — cleaning or replacement? How to decide correctly

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) collects soot particles from the exhaust and burns them off during regeneration. If regeneration no longer works reliably — typical with lots of short trips — the filter clogs up: the warning light comes on, the engine loses power, and finally goes into limp mode. Then the question arises: is a regeneration drive enough, is professional cleaning worthwhile, or is a replacement filter needed? This guide categorises the symptoms and sets out the decision criteria.

Symptoms of a blocked DPF

Typical signs are the DPF or check-engine light, noticeable power loss up to limp mode, rising fuel consumption, and conspicuously frequent regeneration attempts (raised idle speed, fan run-on, diesel smell). The error memory usually contains entries on differential pressure or filter load.

Another warning sign is a rising oil level: with repeatedly aborted regenerations, diesel enters the engine oil and dilutes it — over time this endangers the engine itself.

Why the filter clogs

Active regeneration needs temperature — and that comes mainly from longer drives under load. Predominantly short-trip and city driving prevents complete regenerations; soot accumulates faster than it is burnt off.

Besides soot, ash from oil and fuel additives also deposits in the filter with mileage. Ash cannot be regenerated away — it ultimately determines the filter's service life. Engine-side defects (e.g. injectors, EGR, temperature or differential-pressure sensors, intake leaks) can also disrupt regeneration and must be ruled out before any DPF measure.

Stage 1: regeneration drive and forced regeneration

If the filter is only loaded with soot and the engine is healthy, a longer drive under increased load (country road or motorway per manufacturer guidance) is often enough for active regeneration to complete. If the load is already too high for that, the workshop can trigger a forced regeneration via the diagnostic tool.

Important: both only remove soot. If regeneration failed because of an engine-side defect, the problem returns as long as the cause is not fixed.

Stage 2: professional cleaning

With high soot and ash loading, professional off-vehicle cleaning can largely clear the filter again — provided the ceramic core is mechanically intact. It is generally considerably cheaper than a new part.

Limits of cleaning: if the monolith is cracked, melted, or damaged (for instance after overheating from an uncontrolled regeneration), no cleaning will help — the filter is then a case for replacement.

Stage 3: replacement — what to watch for

For replacement, the new filter must match the engine and exhaust variant exactly — the part number or VIN is decisive. After installation, the load values in the ECU must be reset and the filter change registered.

Removing or disabling the DPF is not an option: it is impermissible in Germany and voids the vehicle's type approval. We stock diesel particulate filters for various vehicles — we verify fitment against your VIN; delivery comes with statutory warranty.

FAQ

Can I keep driving with a blocked DPF?
Only to a limited extent. At an early warning, a regeneration drive per manufacturer guidance can solve the problem. If the warning stays on or limp mode is active, the workshop should check the filter — otherwise consequential damage looms, including via oil dilution.
Which costs less — cleaning or replacement?
Professional cleaning is generally cheaper than a replacement filter but requires a mechanically intact ceramic core. With a cracked or melted monolith, only replacement remains. Actual costs depend on vehicle and filter.
Why does my DPF keep clogging?
Most common causes are lots of short trips (regeneration never completes) and engine-side defects such as faulty injectors, EGR, or sensor problems. As long as the cause persists, even a cleaned or new filter will clog again.
May the DPF be removed?
No. Removing or disabling the particulate filter is impermissible and voids the vehicle's type approval.
Does Molly Motors supply matching particulate filters?
Yes, for various vehicles and engine variants. Send us your VIN at info@mollymotors.de or call +49 4361 6266776 — we check fitment.
